Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from the umbilical cord, delivered within a platelet-poor plasma (PPP) scaffold. Developed by the University of Chile, the treatment is specifically designed for patients with osteochondral lesions of the talus (LOC). It is administered as a biological augmentation to traditional arthroscopic debridement and microfracture surgery. The therapy aims to enhance the biological repair of ankle cartilage by promoting the formation of high-quality repair tissue, potentially superior to the fibrocartilage typically formed after standard microfracture procedures. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT03905824) to compare functional and radiological outcomes against standard surgical care.
