Allogeneic umbilical cord-derived mononuclear cells (UCB-MNCs) are an investigational cell therapy being developed by Tehran University of Medical Sciences for the treatment of spastic cerebral palsy. The therapy involves the intrathecal administration of a heterogeneous population of cells derived from umbilical cord blood, including hematopoietic stem cells, lymphocytes, monocytes, and endothelial progenitor cells. In clinical studies, these cells are evaluated for their ability to improve gross motor function and reduce spasticity in pediatric patients. The therapeutic effect is hypothesized to stem from the paracrine release of neurotrophic and anti-inflammatory factors that promote neural repair and modulate the neuroinflammatory environment associated with brain injury in cerebral palsy.
