Allogeneic umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) are an investigational cell therapy being developed by Shanghai Changzheng Hospital for the treatment of newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D), particularly in pediatric populations. These multipotent cells are derived from the umbilical cord and possess significant immunomodulatory properties, including the ability to suppress the activation and proliferation of auto-reactive T-cells and promote the induction of regulatory T-cells (Tregs). By mitigating the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells, the therapy aims to preserve residual insulin secretion and improve long-term glycemic control. In clinical studies, these cells are typically administered via intravenous infusion as an adjunct to standard insulin therapy.
