This is an investigational allogeneic cell therapy developed by the Mayo Clinic, consisting of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from vertebral bone marrow. The therapy is being evaluated for the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and in kidney transplant recipients. These vertebral bone marrow-derived MSCs are hypothesized to possess unique regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties compared to MSCs from other sources. The mechanism of action involves the secretion of paracrine factors, including growth factors and anti-inflammatory cytokines, which aim to reduce renal inflammation, promote tissue repair, and prevent the progression of kidney damage to end-stage renal disease. Clinical evaluation has focused on safety and tolerability via intravenous or combined intravenous and intra-arterial administration, with protocols allowing for repeat dosing.
