This combination therapy consists of allogenic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) and oral cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), currently being investigated by the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro for the treatment of recent-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus. Mesenchymal stem cells are utilized for their potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which aim to suppress the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta-cells and preserve residual insulin production. Cholecalciferol is administered as an adjunct to enhance the regulatory T-cell response and provide synergistic immune modulation. The therapy is typically delivered as a single intravenous infusion of ASCs followed by long-term oral Vitamin D supplementation.
