Overview

Allogenic fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is an investigational biologic therapy being evaluated for the treatment of bipolar depression. The intervention, led by researcher Dr. Valerie Taylor, involves the transfer of gut microbiota from healthy, screened donors to patients with bipolar disorder. The primary mechanism of action is the modulation of the patient's gut microbiome, which is believed to influence mental health through the gut-brain axis. In a pilot randomized controlled trial, the therapy is administered via colonoscopy and compared against an autologous FMT (using the patient's own stool) as a placebo. This experimental approach is being investigated as an adjunctive treatment for patients with bipolar depression who have not responded adequately to standard therapies. The research is primarily associated with the University of Toronto, Women's College Hospital, and the University of Calgary.
