Allogenic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences for the treatment of chronic graft versus host disease (cGVHD). These multipotent stromal cells are derived from donor bone marrow and are administered via intramedullary injection. MSCs exert their therapeutic effect through complex immunomodulatory mechanisms, including the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines and the induction of regulatory T cells, which collectively suppress the aberrant donor-derived immune response against host tissues. The therapy is primarily being evaluated in Phase 2/3 clinical trials for patients with extensive cGVHD involving the skin or liver who have failed standard first-line therapies such as corticosteroids.
