Overview

Allogenic serum refers to the blood serum collected from a donor (not the patient themselves) and processed for therapeutic use, most commonly as eye drops for severe ocular surface diseases such as dry eye disease, Sjögren’s syndrome, persistent epithelial defects, and other complex ocular surface disorders. Allogenic serum contains many of the same biological components found in natural human tears—including growth factors (e.g., epidermal growth factor), vitamins (e.g., vitamin A), fibronectin, albumin, immunoglobulins, and cytokines—which support epithelial healing and provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The mechanism of action is primarily through providing epitheliotrophic factors that promote corneal epithelial proliferation and repair while mimicking the biochemical environment of natural tears. Allogenic serum is especially useful for patients unable to donate their own blood or when larger quantities are needed. It is produced by collecting whole blood from screened donors (often group AB to minimize antibody risk), allowing it to clot without anticoagulant, centrifuging to separate out the serum component, diluting with sterile saline if necessary (commonly 20–50%), aliquoting into vials under aseptic conditions, and storing frozen until use[1][2][3][4][7]. Clinical studies show comparable efficacy between autologous (self-donated) and allogeneic preparations; however, some evidence suggests superior symptom relief in certain populations such as Sjögren’s syndrome[6][8].
