This is an investigational cell therapy being developed by the University of Chile for the treatment of osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT). The active ingredient consists of allogenic (donor-derived) mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) obtained from umbilical cord tissue. The therapy is administered as part of a combination treatment approach where the cells are embedded in a platelet-poor plasma (PPP) scaffold and applied to the lesion site following arthroscopic debridement and microfracture procedures. The biological objective is to promote the regeneration of high-quality hyaline-like cartilage and subchondral bone, potentially offering superior clinical and imaging outcomes compared to the fibrocartilage that typically forms after standard microfracture treatment alone. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial.
