Overview

Allopurinol is a small molecule pharmaceutical drug classified as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It is primarily used to reduce the production of uric acid in the body by inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which converts hypoxanthine to xanthine and then to uric acid. This mechanism lowers serum and urinary uric acid concentrations. Allopurinol is indicated for the management of gout (including acute attacks, tophi, joint destruction), prevention of recurrent calcium oxalate kidney stones in patients with high uric acid excretion, and for controlling hyperuricemia associated with cancer therapy (tumor lysis syndrome) in leukemia, lymphoma, and solid tumor malignancies[1][2][4][7]. The drug was first approved by the FDA in 1966.
