Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Allokid is an intravenous formulation of allopurinol sodium, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, developed by Ace Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with UMC Utrecht. It is specifically formulated for use in neonates to prevent hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and provide cardioprotection. Allopurinol acts by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, thereby preventing the formation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and limiting cell damage during reperfusion and reoxygenation. Allokid is currently being evaluated in Phase III clinical trials, including the ALBINO trial (NCT03162653) for near-term infants with neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) following perinatal asphyxia, and the CRUCIAL trial (NCT04217421) for neonates with critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.
