Almagate is a crystalline hydrated aluminum-magnesium hydroxycarbonate antacid, chemically described as aluminum magnesium carbonate hydroxide tetrahydrate. It acts by neutralizing gastric hydrochloric acid, rapidly increasing gastric pH and reducing acidity in the stomach. This mechanism provides symptomatic relief from conditions such as heartburn, acid indigestion, gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and dyspepsia. Compared to other antacids like aluminum hydroxide or magaldrate, almagate demonstrates a higher and more rapid acid-neutralizing capacity and can also decrease pepsin proteolytic activity. Its unique rigid lattice structure contributes to its potent gastroprotective effects through mucosal prostaglandin generation and free radical scavenging[4][6]. Adverse effects are generally mild; diarrhea and nausea are most commonly reported[4].
