Almansour-001 is a prophylactic plasmid DNA (pDNA) vaccine candidate developed by Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (IAU) for the prevention of COVID-19. The vaccine utilizes the pVAX1 plasmid, an FDA-approved vector, which has been engineered to carry a synthetic, codon-optimized gene sequence encoding the full-length spike (S) protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (S.opt.FL). Designed for thermal stability to facilitate distribution without stringent cold-chain requirements, the vaccine is administered intramuscularly. Once inside host cells, the plasmid DNA is transcribed and translated to express the spike protein, which then functions as an antigen to stimulate the production of neutralizing antibodies and activate cellular immune responses, providing protection against infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
