Overview

Almitrine is a diphenylmethylpiperazine derivative classified as a respiratory stimulant. It acts primarily as an agonist of peripheral chemoreceptors located on the carotid bodies, enhancing respiration by increasing arterial oxygen tension and decreasing arterial carbon dioxide tension. Almitrine is used in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and has also been reported to be beneficial for nocturnal oxygen desaturation without impairing sleep quality. In some markets, it has been combined with raubasine (as Duxil) for age-related cerebral disorders and functional rehabilitation after stroke. The drug may also have anti-oxidant effects related to its action on the mitochondrial electron transport chain[1][2][3][5][6].
