Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Duxil is a fixed-dose combination of almitrine (a peripheral chemoreceptor agonist and respiratory stimulant) and raubasine (a vasoactive indole alkaloid with alpha-adrenolytic properties). Developed by Servier, Duxil is designed to improve oxygenation and blood flow to cerebral and neurosensory tissues. Almitrine acts on peripheral chemoreceptors in the carotid bodies to increase arterial oxygen tension, while raubasine acts as an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist to promote vasodilation and enhance microcirculation. This synergistic combination has been utilized for the treatment of age-related cognitive decline, vascular cognitive impairment, and functional rehabilitation after stroke. Although historically marketed in several countries, Duxil has been withdrawn in some regions, including France, due to safety concerns such as peripheral neuropathy and weight loss.
