Overview

Almond hull extract is an extract derived from the hull, or outer covering, of the almond (Prunus dulcis) fruit. This extract is rich in polyphenolic compounds, including tannins and flavonoids, with key phytochemicals identified as protocatechuic acid, p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, catechin, epicatechin, and quercetin. Preclinical studies suggest that almond hull extract exerts antioxidant, hypolipidemic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. Mechanistically, its bioactive polyphenols are believed to lower plasma total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol while increasing HDL cholesterol, inhibit lipid peroxidation, and protect against oxidative stress. Additionally, it impairs bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation, supporting antimicrobial activity. Almond hull extract is primarily investigated as a functional food ingredient, dietary supplement, or for valorization from agricultural waste, with applications in prevention of hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis as well as food safety[1][2][3][4].
