Overview

Alnus rhombifolia pollen is a biologic allergenic extract derived from the white alder tree, native to western North America. It is used clinically for the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions. As a diagnostic agent, it is applied via percutaneous or intradermal injection to elicit a wheal-and-flare reaction in sensitized individuals. In immunotherapy, gradual exposure to the extract is used to induce immunological tolerance. The extract contains proteins that act as allergens, which cross-link specific IgE antibodies bound to FceRI receptors on mast cells and basophils, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine and leukotrienes.
