Alnus serrulata pollen is a non-standardized allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the hazel alder (or tag alder) tree, which is native to the eastern United States. Manufactured by Greer Laboratories, this biological product is used for both the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions. In diagnostic settings, it is utilized in percutaneous or intradermal skin testing to identify patients with hazel alder pollen sensitivity. Therapeutically, it is administered via subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy (AIT), where repeated exposure to increasing doses of the allergen aims to induce immunological tolerance. This process typically involves shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated allergic profile to a Th1-mediated or regulatory T cell-driven response, thereby reducing symptoms of allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma.
