**Aloe vera** is a non-standardized botanical material derived primarily from the leaves of *Aloe vera* (commonly also called *Aloe barbadensis*). Depending on the preparation, it may contain inner-leaf gel, polysaccharides such as acemannan, and other plant constituents; aloe latex is compositionally distinct and contains anthraquinone laxative compounds. Aloe vera has been studied in topical, oral, and oral-rinse preparations for radiation-related skin and oral mucosal injury, psoriasis, ulcerative colitis, xerostomia, periodontal disease, interstitial cystitis, and wound-healing applications. Clinical evidence is formulation- and indication-dependent: multiple randomized studies found no preventive benefit for radiation dermatitis, whereas limited studies have reported possible benefit in active ulcerative colitis, plaque psoriasis, and radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis. It is not a single chemically defined pharmaceutical active ingredient, and safety, pharmacology, and efficacy vary materially by plant part, extraction method, concentration, route, and product quality.
