Aloe vera gel is the clear, mucilaginous substance derived from the inner part of the leaves of the Aloe barbadensis plant. It contains a variety of bioactive compounds including vitamins (C, A, E, B12), minerals (calcium, magnesium, zinc), enzymes (lipase and alilase), amino acids, and antioxidants. The primary mechanism of action is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity; it inhibits cyclooxygenase pathways to decrease prostaglandin E2 production from arachidonic acid[4]. Topically applied aloe vera gel is widely used for treating minor burns (including sunburns), wounds, cuts and scrapes, acne lesions, psoriasis plaques, insect bites/stings and other skin irritations due to its soothing effect on inflamed tissue[1][2][8]. It also promotes wound healing by stimulating fibroblast activity and collagen synthesis. Orally consumed aloe vera products are promoted for digestive health—helping with hydration as well as potentially regulating blood sugar in people with prediabetes or diabetes—and may have mild laxative effects due to certain anthraquinones present in latex but not in pure gel[5][6]. However oral use should be approached cautiously due to potential side effects if contaminated with latex or whole-leaf extract.
