Aloe vera is a medicinal plant extract being evaluated for its therapeutic potential in the treatment of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), a chronic premalignant condition of the oral cavity. In a clinical trial conducted at The Oxford Dental College, Hospital and Research Center in Bangalore, India, a combination of topical aloe vera gel and systemic aloe vera juice was compared against standard intralesional steroid and antioxidant therapy. Aloe vera contains various bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, anthraquinones, and vitamins, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and wound-healing properties. The treatment aims to alleviate symptoms such as burning sensations and improve clinical parameters like interincisal mouth opening and cheek flexibility by potentially inhibiting fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis associated with OSMF.
