Overview

Alogliptin is an oral antidiabetic drug used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to the class of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. Alogliptin works by selectively inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, which increases levels of incretin hormones such as GLP-1 and GIP. This leads to increased insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and decreased glucagon secretion from alpha cells in a glucose-dependent manner, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Alogliptin is weight-neutral and has a low risk of hypoglycemia when used alone. It was developed by Takeda and is available as monotherapy (Nesina/Vipidia) or in combination with other agents for type 2 diabetes[1][2][3][4][5][7].
