Overview

ALPHA-0702 is a synthetic, 17-amino acid peptide derived from the C-terminal region of the human alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) protein. Developed by Alpha-1 Biologics, it is being investigated as a novel therapeutic for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) and related inflammatory lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Unlike traditional augmentation therapy which utilizes plasma-derived AAT protein, ALPHA-0702 is a small peptide designed to mimic the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory functions of the full-length protein. It works by modulating the inflammatory response, specifically by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha and IL-8, and potentially interacting with the LRP1 receptor to trigger protective cellular signaling. Its small size allows for alternative delivery methods, including inhalation, which may offer improved patient convenience and direct targeting of lung tissue compared to intravenous infusions.
