alpha 3 integrin shRNA is a short hairpin RNA-based research tool and potential therapeutic candidate designed to silence the expression of the alpha 3 integrin subunit (ITGA3). It functions through the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway, where the shRNA is processed into small interfering RNAs that guide the degradation of ITGA3 mRNA, thereby reducing the levels of the alpha 3 integrin protein. In preclinical research, specifically in orthotopic mouse models of pancreatic cancer, this shRNA has been delivered via lentiviral vectors to study the role of ITGA3 in tumor progression, cell adhesion, and metastasis. While it effectively achieves molecular knockdown, studies have indicated that silencing the alpha 3 subunit may not significantly inhibit tumor growth or metastasis in certain recalcitrant diseases like pancreatic cancer compared to other subunits such as beta 1 integrin.
