Overview

Alpha-amyrin is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid found in various plant species, including the bark of birch and oak trees, and resins from species such as *Protium heptaphyllum*. It is primarily investigated as a research compound for its diverse pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antihyperglycemic, and neuroprotective effects. Preclinical studies suggest that alpha-amyrin may modulate several signaling pathways, such as the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) in the hippocampus to ameliorate cognitive impairment. It has also been studied for its potential inhibitory effects on protein kinase A (PKA) and its interaction with cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), COX-2, and NF-κB. Currently, alpha-amyrin is not under formal pharmaceutical development by any commercial entity and has no regulatory approval for clinical use.
