Overview

Alpha-arbutin is a synthetic glycoside used primarily in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries for its skin lightening effects and treatment of hyperpigmentation. It acts as a safer alternative to hydroquinone. The primary mechanism of action is competitive inhibition of tyrosinase, an enzyme essential for melanin synthesis. By inhibiting tyrosinase activity (without affecting its gene expression), alpha-arbutin reduces the formation of melanin in melanocytes, leading to lighter skin tones and improvement in hyperpigmentation disorders. Alpha-arbutin has been shown to be more potent than arbutin itself as a tyrosinase inhibitor[1][6][8].
