Overview

Alpha-asarone is a naturally occurring phenylpropanoid small molecule extracted from the rhizomes of *Acorus* species, most notably *Acorus tatarinowii* and *Acorus calamus*. It is a research compound that has demonstrated a broad range of pharmacological activities in the central nervous system and metabolic pathways. In China, it is marketed under the brand name Xixinnaojiaonang as an antiepileptic medication. Its mechanism of action is multi-targeted, involving the modulation of GABAergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission, inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels, and suppression of neuroinflammation through the NF-kappa B pathway. Preclinical studies have also explored its potential as a treatment for depression, anxiety, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and hyperlipidemia, although its clinical utility is currently limited by potential toxicity at higher doses.
