alpha-BSM is a biomimetic, endothermically setting apatitic calcium phosphate bone substitute material. Developed by Etex Corporation, it is designed to be injectable and hardens at body temperature (37°C) to form a poorly crystalline hydroxyapatite, which closely resembles the mineral phase of natural bone. The material is osteoconductive, providing a scaffold for new bone growth, and is gradually resorbed and replaced by native bone through cell-mediated remodeling by osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Beyond its use as a structural filler for fractures and dental defects, alpha-BSM serves as a delivery vehicle for therapeutic agents such as recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and antibiotics like gentamicin, enhancing its regenerative and therapeutic potential in orthopedic and dental applications.
