Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The alpha-crystallin chaperone enhancer is an early-stage small molecule drug program being developed by Plex Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of presbyopia, cataracts, and myopia. The program targets alpha-crystallin (AC), a member of the small heat shock protein (sHsp) family that serves as a molecular chaperone in the eye lens, protecting lens proteins from aggregation that would otherwise lead to light scattering, cataract formation, and presbyopia. The proposed mechanism of action involves enhancing or activating the chaperone-like activity of alpha-crystallin to inhibit or reverse the formation of high molecular weight protein aggregates in the lens, thereby potentially restoring lens elasticity and transparency without surgery.
