Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**alpha-cyperone** is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene majorly found in Cyperus rotundus and other plants. It has demonstrated a wide range of pharmacological activities: - **Antidepressant-like effects** through modulation of SIRT3/ROS/NF-κB signaling and suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome, leading to enhanced neuroplasticity. - **Anti-inflammatory effects** mediated by reduced expression of COX-2 and IL-6 via NF-κB pathway. - **Antifungal activity**, particularly fungicidal effects against Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida krusei, and synergistic action when combined with fluconazole through possible ROS-mediated pathways. - **Cell protection** against oxidative stress-induced damage and apoptosis in neuronal cells, attributed to reduced ROS production. - **Inhibition of virulence factors** such as capsule synthesis in pathogenic fungi and Hla production in Staphylococcus aureus, suggesting antimicrobial potential. It is not classified as a pharmaceutical drug and is primarily a research chemical with bioactive properties.
