Alpha DaRT (Diffusing Alpha-emitters Radiation Therapy) is a novel radiotherapy device designed for the local treatment of solid tumors. The technology involves the intratumoral implantation of sources impregnated with radium-224. As radium-224 decays, it releases short-lived alpha-emitting daughter nuclides that diffuse within the tumor microenvironment and deliver highly localized and potent alpha radiation. This results in direct and irreparable double-strand DNA breaks in cancer cells, leading to cell death while sparing surrounding healthy tissue due to the limited range of alpha particles[1][4][6]. The therapy is minimally invasive and can be administered in a single session under local anesthesia for superficial tumors[4]. Preclinical and clinical studies suggest that Alpha DaRT may also stimulate an antitumor immune response[1][4]. Developed by Alpha Tau Medical, it is being investigated across multiple indications including recurrent glioblastoma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, liver metastases from colorectal cancer, recurrent lung cancer, head and neck cancers, and advanced pancreatic cancer[5][7].
