Overview

AFP-P is a therapeutic peptide vaccine candidate consisting of an epitope derived from alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), an oncofetal protein that is typically expressed during fetal development and significantly overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). As a cancer vaccine, AFP-P is designed to stimulate the immune system to recognize and target AFP-expressing malignant cells. Specifically, it aims to induce the proliferation of AFP-specific CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) that secrete interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and activate natural killer (NK) cells to release granzyme B. While AFP-P alone often exhibits weak immunogenicity, it is frequently studied in combination with carrier proteins or adjuvants, such as heat shock protein 72 (HSP72), to enhance its antitumor efficacy and elicit a more robust immune response.
