Overview

Alpha-hydroxyfarnesylphosphonic acid is a synthetic small molecule that acts as a nonhydrolyzable analog of farnesyl pyrophosphate. Its primary mechanism is competitive inhibition of the enzyme farnesyl transferase (FTase), which catalyzes the transfer of a farnesyl group to target proteins such as Ras. By inhibiting FTase activity, this compound can block protein prenylation processes critical for cell signaling and proliferation. It has been used in research settings to study Ras processing and related cellular pathways[1][2][5]. The compound belongs to the class of sesquiterpenoids[3].
