Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Alpha-lactose is the alpha anomer of lactose, a naturally occurring disaccharide composed of galactose and glucose. It is widely used as a pharmaceutical excipient, serving as a tablet filler, diluent, and carrier in dry powder inhalers (DPIs). In addition to its role as an inactive ingredient, alpha-lactose is digested by the intestinal enzyme lactase-phlorizin hydrolase (LCT). Recent research has also investigated its potential immunomodulatory and antineoplastic properties, specifically its ability to bind galectin-9 (Gal-9), block the TIM-3/Gal-9 immune checkpoint, and downregulate vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) expression to inhibit angiogenesis in glioblastoma.
