A combination of essential polyunsaturated fatty acid (EFA) esters, specifically alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Developed by Wroclaw Medical University, this formulation is being investigated in the Phase 3 OMEGA trial for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in adults. The mechanism of action involves the activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) and free fatty acid receptors, which leads to improved lipid profiles (increased HDL and decreased LDL cholesterol) and reduced systemic inflammation. ALA is particularly noted for its anti-inflammatory properties and its status as an essential fatty acid that cannot be synthesized by the human body. The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of these combined esters in reducing risk factors for atherosclerosis, stroke, and myocardial infarction by modulating metabolic and inflammatory pathways.
