Alpha-linolenic acid-enriched triacylglycerol (ALA-TAG) is a modified lipid in which the glycerol backbone of a triacylglycerol molecule is predominantly esterified with alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid. This formulation increases the dietary intake of ALA beyond typical food sources. ALA-TAG is investigated for its potential to improve lipid metabolism, support cardiovascular health, and reduce risk factors associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Mechanistically, it serves as a source of ALA, which can be converted in the body to longer-chain omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA; these are known to exert anti-inflammatory effects and modulate lipid profiles by reducing triglycerides and possibly lowering blood pressure[1][2][4]. While standard dietary ALA has demonstrated benefits in reducing cardiovascular risk factors such as atherosclerosis and hypertension[1][8], studies comparing ALA-TAG with other forms (such as diacylglycerols) suggest that its metabolic effects may be less pronounced than those of diacylglycerol-based formulations[2]. The primary indication for use is as a dietary supplement or functional food ingredient aimed at supporting heart health or managing dyslipidemia.
