Overview

Alpha-methyltryptamine (AMT) is a synthetic tryptamine derivative that functions as a stimulant, hallucinogen, and antidepressant. It acts as a balanced monoamine releasing agent, increasing the synaptic concentrations of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, while simultaneously serving as a non-selective agonist at several serotonin (5-HT) receptor subtypes, including 5-HT1A, 5-HT2A, and 5-HT2C. Additionally, the compound exhibits weak, reversible inhibitory activity against monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). Originally developed by the Upjohn company in the 1960s, alpha-methyltryptamine was briefly utilized clinically as an antidepressant in the Soviet Union under the trade name Indopan before its discontinuation. In contemporary settings, it is primarily encountered as a research chemical or recreational substance and is regulated as a controlled substance in many countries.
