alpha-synuclein

Alpha-synuclein is a protein that is the primary component of Lewy bodies, pathological aggregates found in neurodegenerative diseases known as synucleinopathies, including Parkinson's disease, Dementia with Lewy bodies, and Multiple System Atrophy. In the context of drug development, alpha-synuclein is being investigated as an antigen in active immunization strategies (vaccines) to stimulate the body's immune system to clear or prevent the accumulation of pathological alpha-synuclein. These vaccination approaches aim to induce both humoral (antibody) and cellular (T-cell) immune responses against alpha-synuclein, thereby reducing its accumulation, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration.
