**Alpha-terpineol** is a naturally occurring monoterpene alcohol predominantly found in the essential oils of pine, eucalyptus, petitgrain, and other plants. It is the most commercially significant of the terpineol isomers and is characterized by a pleasant lilac-like or pine aroma[1][2][3][5][6]. Alpha-terpineol is commonly used as an ingredient in perfumes, flavors, cosmetics, soaps, and food products, serving both aromatic and solvent functions[1][2][5][6]. In addition to its extensive application in fragrance and flavor industries, it acts as a solvent in industrial cleaners, disinfectants, resins, and varnishes[1][2][6]. Alpha-terpineol displays antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, mild antiseptic, antioxidant, and potential anticancer and analgesic properties, contributing to its use in topical pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and medicinal formulations[2][3][4]. Mechanistically, its antimicrobial effect is attributed to disruption of microbial cell walls and membranes; it can also suppress pro-inflammatory mediator production[3][4]. Alpha-terpineol is usually produced by hydration of alpha-pinene from turpentine oil, or through biotransformation processes involving limonene or via extraction from plant oils[1][2][5].
