Overview

**Alpha-tocotrienol** is a natural member of the vitamin E family, specifically a tocotrienol (as opposed to the tocopherol forms). It is recognized for its potent antioxidant, neuroprotective, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer activity. Alpha-tocotrienol protects cells against oxidative stress by augmenting endogenous antioxidant enzyme activity, quenching free radicals, and inhibiting lipid peroxidation. It demonstrates unique neuroprotective effects, including the inhibition of 12-lipoxygenase, c-Src kinase, phospholipase A2, and upregulation of multidrug resistance-associated protein 1 (MRP1), thus reducing neurotoxicity and limiting brain tissue damage, such as in stroke. It also inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol biosynthesis. Alpha-tocotrienol mediates anti-inflammatory effects primarily through suppression of NF-κB, cyclooxygenase-2, and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Its pharmacological profile includes potential benefits in cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, metabolic, and inflammatory disorders. It is generally supplied as an oral dietary supplement and often found as part of full-spectrum vitamin E (tocopherols and tocotrienols) supplements[1][2].
