Overview
Alpha Varin Complex is a topical hemp oil formulation developed by Gregory L. Smith, MD, MPH, specifically for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness). The formulation is characterized by a high concentration of specific cannabinoids, including tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), cannabidivarin (CBDV), and cannabidiol (CBD), supplemented with 3% peppermint oil. These active ingredients are delivered in a lanolin-based lotion with a natural emu oil carrier. The therapeutic mechanism targets the endocannabinoid system (ECS) receptors located on hair follicles. Specifically, CBD acts as a negative allosteric modulator of the CB1 receptor, while THCV acts as an antagonist; blocking these receptors has been shown to promote hair shaft elongation. Additionally, the formulation interacts with vanilloid receptors TRPV1 and TRPV4 to regulate the hair follicle cycle. Clinical evaluation in an early-phase trial demonstrated a significant increase in hair count among participants using the topical daily over a six-month period.
