Overview

Alpharix Tetra (also known as Fluarix Tetra) is a quadrivalent inactivated split-virion influenza vaccine developed and manufactured by GSK. It is designed to provide broad protection against seasonal influenza by including antigens from four different strains: two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). The vaccine works by inducing the production of hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibodies that neutralize the virus and prevent infection. It is indicated for active immunization of adults and children from 6 months of age. The specific mention of University Hospital, Ghent refers to its role as the lead sponsor for the Phase 4 BioVacSafe study, which utilized this vaccine to investigate biomarkers of innate and adaptive immune activation following vaccination.
