Overview

Alpinia officinarum rhizome extract is derived from the dried rhizomes of *Alpinia officinarum* Hance, a perennial plant of the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family, commonly known as lesser galangal. The extract contains diverse phytochemicals such as diarylheptanoids, flavonoids (e.g., galangin, isorhamnetin, kaempferide), phytosterols, and terpenes. It has been traditionally used in Chinese and Southeast Asian medicine for digestive disorders, pain relief, and general health. Modern research confirms its **antioxidant**, **anti-inflammatory**, **antimicrobial**, and **anticancer** activities. The mechanisms are mediated by inhibition of inflammatory mediators (such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6), suppression of nitric oxide (NO) production, free radical scavenging, inhibition of cell proliferation (arresting the cell cycle and inducing apoptosis in cancer cell lines), and enzyme inhibition. The extract acts via multiple pathways, including suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokine expression and induction of intrinsic mitochondrial apoptosis in cancer cells[1][2][3][4].
