alprazolam

Alprazolam is a fast-acting, high-potency triazolobenzodiazepine used primarily for the treatment of anxiety disorders and panic disorder, including anxiety associated with depression. It acts as a central nervous system depressant by binding to the benzodiazepine site on the GABA A receptor complex in the brain, enhancing the inhibitory effects of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). This results in decreased abnormal excitement and produces anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, hypnotic, and amnesic effects. Alprazolam is metabolized mainly by CYP3A enzymes and should not be used with strong CYP3A inhibitors. It was first approved by the FDA in 1981 and is available only by prescription[1][2][4][5][7].
