Overview
Alprenolol is a non-selective beta-blocker (beta-adrenoreceptor antagonist) used primarily for the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and cardiac arrhythmias. It acts by blocking beta1 and beta2 adrenergic receptors in the heart and peripheral vasculature, leading to decreased heart rate, reduced myocardial contractility, slowed AV node conduction, and lower blood pressure. Additionally, alprenolol antagonizes serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT1A and 5HT1B) receptors. It has little intrinsic sympathomimetic activity or direct myocardial depressant effect. Developed originally by AstraZeneca but now available as a generic drug from other manufacturers[1][7][9].
