Drug intelligence / Profile preview
"Already using daily oral PrEP at the time of pregnancy diagnosis" refers to a specific active comparator cohort in the PrIMO (Pregnancy, Infant, and Maternal health Outcomes) study (UNCPM 22314) conducted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This cohort comprises pregnant women in Malawi who were already established on a daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) regimen—specifically tenofovir disoproxil fumarate combined with either emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) or lamivudine (TDF/3TC)—at the time of their pregnancy diagnosis. The study evaluates and compares the safety, maternal health outcomes, and infant health outcomes of this oral PrEP regimen against long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) for HIV prevention during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate acts as a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI), while emtricitabine and lamivudine act as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), collectively blocking HIV replication.
