ALS-886 is a novel therapeutic candidate developed by Advanced Life Sciences, primarily for the treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). It is a synthetic antioxidant, specifically a fullerene derivative, designed to function as a "radical sponge" to scavenge free radicals and prevent oxidative tissue damage. The compound demonstrated a benign safety profile in preclinical animal toxicology studies, supporting its potential use in critical care settings for conditions such as sepsis and severe trauma, as well as ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction. As of 2010, ALS-886 had an open Investigational New Drug (IND) application for Phase I clinical trials and had applied for FDA orphan drug designation; however, development was effectively halted following the developer's financial instability and subsequent bankruptcy in 2011.
