Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Alstonia leaf (specifically evaluated as Capsule of Alkaloids from the Leaf of Alstonia scholaris, or CALAS) is an investigational botanical drug developed for the treatment of respiratory diseases, including acute bronchitis, post-infectious cough, and asthma. It is derived from the leaves of *Alstonia scholaris* (Apocynaceae), a plant historically used in traditional 'Dai' ethno-medicine. The active components of CALAS are defined indole alkaloids (such as scholaricine, 19-epischolaricine, vallesamine, and picrinine) that exhibit anti-tussive, expectorant, anti-asthmatic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Originally developed by the Kunming Institute of Botany (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Xiyuan Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, the development rights were later acquired by Xinfenghe Pharmaceutical. CALAS has progressed to Phase III clinical trials in China.
