ALT002

ALT002 is an intranasal formulation of a recombinant human interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (rhIL-1Ra), currently under clinical investigation for the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Developed by Beijing Aulante Pharmaceutical in collaboration with The First Medical Center of the Chinese PLA General Hospital, the drug targets neuroinflammation, a proposed factor in the pathogenesis of ASD. By acting as a competitive antagonist at the interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R), ALT002 blocks the signaling of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1α and IL-1β. The nasal spray delivery method is designed to facilitate the transport of the protein across the blood-brain barrier via the olfactory and trigeminal nerve pathways, potentially reducing systemic side effects while concentrating the therapeutic effect within the central nervous system. Clinical trials specifically target children with ASD who demonstrate elevated levels of inflammatory biomarkers such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α.
