Altastaph is a human polyclonal immune globulin product developed to provide immediate, short-term protection against infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus. It contains high levels of antibodies specifically targeting the capsular polysaccharides of S. aureus types 5 and 8, which together account for approximately 85% of all S. aureus infections[4][5][7]. The product is produced by immunizing healthy volunteers with a vaccine (StaphVAX) to generate plasma rich in anti-S. aureus antibodies[5]. Altastaph is administered intravenously and has been studied as both adjunctive therapy for patients with persistent S. aureus bacteremia and as prophylaxis in high-risk populations such as low-birth-weight infants who are particularly vulnerable to hospital-acquired staphylococcal infections[1][3][4][8]. Its mechanism involves passive immunization—providing ready-made opsonizing antibodies that enhance the host's ability to clear S. aureus from the bloodstream, especially when endogenous antibody production is insufficient or delayed[6][7].
